Overcome microwave mentality

A life coach  shares one of her personal experiences and ways to overcome it. I recall one day standing by my microwave and thinking to myself, “Man, this sure is taking a long time!” As soon as those words entered my mind, I realized that I had been conditioned by instant-gratification ideology. I was no longer patient. I wanted instant results—results so quickly that I considered the microwave as taking too much time. This was an eye-opener for me. In order to have anything of lasting value it must be started on a strong footing. The groundwork may take time, yet it's essential for quality to be prevalent. We need to realign our thinking. Pursue your goals and dreams with a desire for quality, regardless of the time and effort it takes. After all, anything worth doing is worth doing right.

Roko mat Toko mat

Bachpan se bada koi school nahi, curiosity se badi koi teacher nahi. There is no greater school than childhood and no greater teacher than curiosity. Parle G (the largest selling brand of biscuits in the world) asks parents to encourage their child's curiosity and creativity in its campaign called 'Kal ke genius'. While the song has an '80s feel, it is the soul of the film and is written, sung and composed very well. The song aptly encapsulates the philosophy of the campaign. It is urging people to let their kids be just kids and let them explore if they are curious. Parle-G 's Glucose biscuits always evoke a sense of nostalgia. The ad in a nice way talks about the increasing parental control and societal pressures that make kids these days spend more time in study classes than learning through exploring new things. Curiosity is actually the best teacher. Unfortunately, it is just the kind of a thing which parents often discourage. In fact, we keep stopping ch...

Remembering Steve Jobs - the crazy one

For the first few seconds after I read this news on 5th, my world came crashing down on me. It was perhaps the only time that I didn’t care for the technology news; I didn’t want to write about it. Why doesn’t the world realize that my Hero is dead! I don’t care about a world that is a lot less exciting than it was when Steve was around. Can’t you see that my soul is being put through a grinder. Every generation has its heroes. Among the people, who inspire me, I've read about Mahatma Gandhiji only in books. So for me, Steve Jobs was the only living legend, I could look at. I don’t know why, how and where that happened but Steve was my icon. To me, just the idea of Steve was powerful enough. For many of us who live and die for technology and the change it represents, he was an example of what was possible. Steve put life and soul into inanimate objects. Everyone cared for specifications; he saw opportunities that inspired emotions. People saw a phone ; Steve saw a transpo...

Six Principles of Change

Do you believe in change? Believing you can change encourages commitment to the process and enhances the likelihood of success. The belief that you can change is the key to change. This is not the powerlessness message of the 12 steps but rather the message of self-efficacy. Addictions are really no different from other behaviors—believing you can change encourages commitment to the process and enhances the likelihood of success. The type of treatment is less critical than the individual's commitment to change. People can select how they want to pursue change in line with their own values and preferences. They don't need to be told how to change. Brief treatments can change longstanding habits. It is not the duration of the treatment that allows people to change but rather its ability to inspire continued efforts in that direction. Life skills can be the key to licking addiction. All addictions may not be equal; the community-reinforcement approach, with its emphasis on dev...

How can I Make my Offline Life Easier?

Most of us are already hip-deep in online efficiency tools like shared calendars , code libraries, and rss feeds; here are 30 simple ways that you can make your life (the real one) easier: At Home Synchronize recurring events. This can be done annually, monthly, or even weekly. As an example, there are many household tasks that really only need to be done annually. Make it easy to remember when they need to be done by doing them all on the same day. The switch to daylight savings time is a good time to check batteries in smoke detectors , clean screens and windows, change air filters , clean fireplaces, etc. You can do the same with your car, by checking your tires , wiper fluid, battery, etc., every time you get an oil change . Sacrificing one day a month to do household chores like laundry, cleaning, and gardening can relieve the burden of having those things hang over your head and follow you around during the rest of the month. Scatter lots of cheap pens and pencils . Distribu...

Getting Serious About Happiness | TIME

Studying happiness is hard. What one man loves another loathes. One woman's joy is another's junk. Social scientists, therefore, have generally left the contemplation of smiles and satisfaction to poets and philosophers. But that's changing. Drawing on his research on happiness, there are three general pieces of advice: -> Be attuned to what gives you genuine satisfaction . Although many people assume that popular activities like watching TV are enjoyable, their own reports generally indicate that they feel more engaged, energetic, satisfied and happy when doing other things. -> Study yourself . To better understand their own happiness, Csikszentmihalyi says, people should systematically record their activities and feelings every few hours for a week or two. In recording your observations, try to focus on how you actually feel, rather than what you think you ought to be feeling or what you expect to feel. Afterwards, note the high points, particularly, and the low on...
